There are a good number of advantages to using a heart rate monitor. As someone who makes working out a part of my day, at least 4-5 times a week, my heart rate monitor is never far from me. Exercise alone is great to either lose some weight or maintain a healthy body. There’s little sense to exercising though if you’re not really “working” your body at all. In the last 4 or 5 years, the use of a heart rate monitor for almost anyone that does exercise has become more commonplace. Prior to that, the advantages of using a heart rate monitor were known to those professional athletes who relied on their bodies and their physical health in order to be successful in their sport.

Today, anyone who is serious about losing weight and doing so with the help of some regular exercise can benefit just as much from the use of a heart rate monitor. And there’s good reason for it. Studies have shown that our heart rate has to be at a certain level, for at least 30 minutes of exercise in order for our bodies to truly be working out. A monitor allows you to keep check on your heart rate and make sure that you’re reaching the desired “zone” your heart needs to be in for your exercise to be the most effective. Any personal trainer will tell you the same thing. Stopping during exercise to check your heart rate breaks your flow, but this is what many people still tend to do. You end up stopping your working to get an accurate count, only to have your heart rate drop and your routine thrown out of sync.

There are a wide variety of heart rate monitors out there. Personally, I find the advantage of using a heart rate monitor with a strap that puts the monitor right on my chest to be the most effective. They generally come with a watch like wrist band as well, where I can just glance down and see my exact heart rate at any given time.

Beyond exercising though, heart rate monitors also offer benefits to people who have been advised to do some light exercise or to monitor their heart rates as a result of a heart condition or recovering from a heart condition. Heart rate monitors for these types of situations aren’t so much a luxury – but very much a necessity to ensure that during recommended exercise or physical activities that they should be careful with, they can keep a good close look at their heart rate with the heart rate monitor.

In cases of cardiac rehabilitation, the advantages of using a heart rate monitor are much clearer. In cases where you may have to take medication in order to keep your heart rate down, a monitor can mean the difference between being fully aware – and ready – in case of your heart rate dropping below acceptable levels. It can be your first alert to ensure you get the care you need.
