How To Select A Heart Rate Monitor Watch

Timex Ironman Men's Race Trainer Heart Rate Monitor with Data Xchanger Watch

Heart rate monitor watches are fast becoming the standard for monitoring the effectiveness of any fitness training program and are a great way to keep track of your overall health while you are working out. Each of us needs to hit a certain heart rate at various points in our training routine and there is no easier way to see whether or not your are hitting your target than by wearing a heart rate monitor watch.

But what should you look for in a heart rate monitor watch?

The first and most important feature to look for is accuracy. After all, there is little point working out at a particular rate according to your watch if the actual heart rate you are achieving is something different.

The technology behind monitors these days is pretty good and if you buy a watch from any of the leading manufacturers such as Garmin, Polar and Timex then accuracy really should not be an issue. That said, monitors can come with or without a chest strap and some people will argue that models which include a chest strap, and use ECG technology in monitoring the heart, are more accurate than simple wrist models. Whether this is true or not these days is debatable and it is really very much a question of personal choice I think.

Watches also come with a whole variety of different features these days and you will need to think carefully about what you want and, more importantly, what you need. Many of the features are not really that useful and are simply added to help market a particular watch. However, some features may well be useful and this is something which you will need to decide for yourself. Among those features which might be considered as useful are such things as a stopwatch, interval timer, countdown timer and a calorie burn calculator.

Another very important consideration is of course ease of use. Since you are going to be using your watch while exercising you need something which is very easy to read and simple to program while you’re on the move. If you have to get the user’s manual out every time you want to program something into your watch then it’s probably not the watch for you.

Finally, price is always an important consideration and you will find that heart rate monitor watches range very widely in price. You probably don’t need to buy the most expensive watch on the market but you should also be weary about buying something at the bottom end of the market which may well disappoint you in terms of both its features and performance and will probably not last very long under the pressure of a few good workouts. Your sweet spot is probably somewhere in the middle of the market where you will find a wide selection of good quality watches at some very reasonable prices.
